come on guys are we really praising tezcatlipoca's design as good and cool just because seeing it made nasu pull an oberon and use the character more prominently. the art is good in a bubble, the character design could be good in a bubble, but it does not exist in a bubble. this character design was specifically made for and applied inappropriately to an aztec deity. oberon was good, sure, but we're talking about white tezcatlipoca here. white skinned blonde-haired tezcatlipoca. congressman tezcatlipoca. "it's just like oberon, nasu saw a good design and" what? a what design? like god i know everyone kind of let quetz slide but a whitewashed character design that is part of a larger pattern of whitewashing is actually a good design now if it's these particular guys doing it?

So, just curious how many writers and creators will have to be forcibly outed by relentless harassment before we acknowledge that "This queer characters was written by a cishet person and that's why they're bad" is not good criticism.

Also I cannot overstate how much "We should scrutinize out queer authors MORE" was not the point of this post, or my tags on it. Queer creators already cannot fucking win. If they're not out loud and clear, they get ripped to pieces. If they're out and proud and make art that doesn't rise to the impossible standard of perfectly representing all queer people everywhere they get ripped to pieces.

There isn't a way forward from this without being willing to admit that what is good representation is subjective. There isn't a way forward from this without admitting that we aren't all looking for the same thing in queer media and queer characters, that something not being for me doesn't make it necessarily bad and harmful, and that what we need is more and a greater variety of queer characters, not to force them all into one arbitrary formula.

Less than a day after I posted this, the notes were already filling up with testimonials from creators afraid to represent themselves in their own work because they are aware of the unforgiving scrutiny applied to all marginalized characters and they know their characters will be seen as imperfect representation.

You have to realize that the rigid view of what constitutes "good representation" is not just hurting the privileged creators you deem acceptable targets. It is hurting marginalized creators who want to represent themselves and share their stories in their voices.

y'all, the OP on the Barbie breakup headlines post going around right now is a TERF. Please, I beg you, go into your preferences and blacklist common TERF tags like 'terfs please interact' and 'radfem safe' so you are less likely to platform TERFs. :/

But listen, this is a good time to update your filtered tags! Filtered tags a) work on desktop and mobile b) aren't reliant on an outside service like Shinigami Eyes c) trigger on tags the OP and/or the current reblogger put on.

From mobile:

Your blog > cog icon > Account Settings > Content You See

From desktop:

Hamburger menu on the top left > Settings > Account > Filtered tags

Then add some common tags used by shitty people for their shitty ideas!

This will screen these tags and make it so you have to actively tap/click to look at the post and thus warn you if OP has tagged the post with one of those things.

I have a bunch of dogwhistle stuff tagged, not just TERF stuff, but it's a good way to avoid accidentally platforming people who hate my family. :)
